Character meets contemporary at Twin Sisters in the Texas Hill Country

Life in the Texas Hill Country has a character all its own - slower, more deliberate, and dictated as much by the environment as it is by the rhythms of modern living.

Rolling limestone hills dotted with live oak, juniper and elm trees stretch out beneath wide, open skies. The Guadeloupe River carves its way through the landscape – sometimes shallow and languid, other times forceful and unyielding.

Life here is adapted to scorching heat. Local architecture is dominated by vernacular materials with high thermal mass like stone and wood, with deep porches and shaded terraces that maximize year-round comfort.

Resort-style living at Cordillera Ranch

Within this unique setting, Cordillera Ranch is a resort-style community designed to make the most of the characterful landscape and distinctive feeling that makes the Hill Country such a draw.

Set on a 1.2-acre lot in the Clubs Village community at Cordillera, the latest property WoodCo collaborated on is affectionately dubbed ‘Twin Sisters’ – having been designed to take full advantage of its 20-mile views across to a local landmark of the same name. An elevated aspect also affords views over the Jack Nicklaus designed golf course at Cordillera, and the Guadeloupe river beyond.

Designed by architect Oscar E. Flores and constructed by Todd Glowka, the property itself offers a modern take on classic Hill Country architecture

Classic Mediterranean styling

From the outside, the single-storey dwelling has a low-set profile typical of Mediterranean, villa-style architecture that works so well in this climate. Hunkered into the landscape, deep roof overhangs provide shade and privacy for the interior spaces, while crisp white masonry is softened using classic limestone cladding.

Internally, every inch of vertical space is used – with soaring vaulted ceilings, large windows and a monochrome palette emphasizing the sense of light and space, while allowing the landscape beyond to become part of the architecture.

Bold, black ceiling beams frame cavernous spaces, including the expansive living area and impressive chef’s kitchen, creating a sense of scale and grandeur.

Introducing warmth and texture with wood

As a counterpoint to these highly restrained and contemporary design choices, our Malone Plank - a rich European oak wood flooring in a smoky, dark-stained finish - lends much-needed warmth and texture throughout.

The same flooring spans reception areas, kitchen, living space, bedrooms and several bathrooms, creating a cohesive and calming feel that’s also echoed in the wood-clad ceiling of the main terrace, which overlooks a dramatic pool and beautifully landscaped garden.

Connecting architecture to the landscape

This sense of continuity is key to the success of the space. It softens the visual and acoustic experience, creating an atmosphere that feels livable and inviting while reinforcing the property’s connection to the landscape, and the wider identity of this distinctive location.

It’s a modern interpretation of Hill Country living that respects the character and architectural traditions of the region, preserving a sense of identity and rootedness without compromising the owner’s vision for a sleek, contemporary and comfortable home.
