Project Spotlight: Fredericksburg, TX
Builder: Mabery Contracting
Material Supplied: Reclaimed Hand Hewn Beams (10x12x22 ft)
There’s nothing like seeing reclaimed beams used to their full potential. At Turning Stone Circle in Fredericksburg, TX, these massive 10x12 hand hewn timbers (some spanning more than 22 feet) anchor the home with scale, richness, and architectural weight.
Supplied by WoodCo and installed by Mabery Contracting, each beam was left with its history intact: textured surfaces, tonal variation, and the kind of presence that can’t be faked.
This is reclaimed material at its best – structural, expressive, and built into the bones of the design.

Scale and Supply
WoodCo was brought in early to support the structural and aesthetic vision. Large reclaimed beams were sourced for this project, selected for scale, grain, and condition.
Naturally, each beam came with individual variation – slight shifts in shape, tone, and weathered texture.
Cuts were kept minimal to preserve the aged surfaces, and sizes were supplied as close to spec as possible, giving the builder the confidence to plan with precision.

Honest Material
Inside, the reclaimed beams shape ceiling lines, define open volumes, and guide transitions from room to room.
Their alignment follows the material’s form, with framing and joinery adjusted to work with the wood’s natural contours.
No attempt was made to flatten or correct the beams. The result is an interior marked by scale and cohesion, where the timber sets the rhythm.

What Reclaimed Wood Offers
Reclaimed wood beams are salvaged from barns, agricultural buildings, and early industrial structures across the U.S. Their species often reflect regional history – oak in the Northeast, pine in the South, and fir or other softwoods in the Northwest. Reclaimed wood beams are valued for their strength, surface character, and the longevity that has already been proven over decades of use.
There are a few common types of reclaimed real wood ceiling beams, each with distinct visual and structural qualities:
- Hand-hewn: Shaped by axe, with distinct tool marks and surface facets
- Rough sawn: Milled with early saws, bearing linear scoring and variation
- Re-sawn: Reclaimed beams reprocessed to achieve specific dimensions
For the Turning Stone Circle project in Fredericksburg, hand hewn beams were chosen for their textural presence and natural irregularity – qualities that shaped both the design and execution of the home.
Each timber was selected to carry structure while maintaining visual continuity, allowing the character of the wood itself to set the rhythm of the architecture.

Decades in the Details
WoodCo has a long history with reclaimed material. From projects like the Joske’s Building in San Antonio to our ongoing Crockett Building reclamation efforts, we’ve developed processes that support material-led architecture.
Our role is to provide reclaimed wood that’s ready for real use – bundled accurately, prepared responsibly, and supplied with the builder’s process in mind.
